Access

Luggala Estate is located within a designated Special Area of Conservation (SAC), which is subject to specific guidelines that prohibit behaviours that may damage the many rare protected habitats and species.

There is no right of way on the Luggala Estate, and as a busy, private working estate and farming operation, access might be restricted on a particular day without notice for a variety of reasons; therefore before making your journey to the Estate email info@luggala.com to be sure we can accommodate you. Groups must ask permission for specific dates and register with the Administrative office first via email.

The terrain at Luggala is mountainous and there are many exceptionally steep and unsafe sections, it is unsuitable for many people. Be mindful if you are considering bringing children here, it is quite strenuous. The permissive path to Lough Dan includes a steep descent of approximately 240 meters and is a 8km hike, with the return climb posing the greatest difficulty. Straying from the permissive path has resulted in serious injury and, sometimes fatalities. One enters at their own risk.

This is a mountain route so you need to be suitably equipped appropriate footwear. Weather conditions can change rapidly: it can be very wet. There are no services or phone signal.

During periods of permitted public access, access and exit is via the pedestrian gate. One must strictly adhere to posted signage and respect all restrictions. Be advised that no facilities are available on-site. Failure to comply with access rules may result in removal from the property.

Luggala Estate reserves all rights to the commercial use and economic value of the property. Any unauthorised commercial activity—including filming, photography, planned parties, events, or guided access—is strictly prohibited.

    Lough Tay/Guinness Lake

    There is no public access to Lough Tay/ Guinness Lake or it’s surrounding areas within Luggala Estate. The lake is privately owned and is strictly off-limits.

    Authorized Viewing Points:
    The only safe and authorized places to view Lough Tay are within Ballinastoe Woods, especially at the J.B. Malone Memorial viewpoint.

    Important: Any attempt to enter Lough Tay or use unauthorized trails within the Estate is strictly forbidden.

    Arduous Terrain

    Important Reminders

    No fires or camping — Fires pose the most serious threat to the SAC, causing often irreversible damage to fragile peatlands and forests.

    No littering — Everyone must take their rubbish with them to protect wildlife and maintain the natural beauty of the Estate.

    Facilities: There are no toilets, drinking water, or mobile phone coverage on-site.

    Stay on designated paths and follow all instructions from Estate staff.

    Security: Rangers patrol regularly, and CCTV cameras operate continuously for the safety and preservation of the Estate.
